Synopsis
Childhood, and especially early childhood, is one of the most important periods in a person's life. During this period of rapid development, children undergo cognitive, behavioral, and emotional development that plays a significant role in their later life. In this pre-school period, children understand life through play. Play develops children's social and motor skills. Through play, children develop motor skills, meet their peers, experience belonging to a group, become aware of their abilities, and learn their limitations (Orhan & Ayan, 2018). Since preschool education is not part of compulsory education in our country, these institutions have been established privately. This creates a financial burden for families. In general, families where both parents work send their children to nurseries, kindergartens, and classes both to meet their basic needs and to play with their peers and have a good time. These institutions also take care of the children during the day. Children need to receive a good education during this period, when their psychomotor skills undergo rapid and significant changes. The motor skills they acquire during this period form the basis for the sporting activities they will engage in later in life.
For this reason, children need to receive movement training under the guidance of physical education and sports teachers who are experts in this field in order to undergo healthy physical development and acquire the psycho-motor skills of this period. Physical activities and games conducted under the guidance of physical education and sports teachers are crucial for children to acquire motor skills correctly and properly, and to be directed towards appropriate sports branches in line with their motor characteristics. In our world, where it is known that success in sports comes from education acquired at an early age, unfortunately, children in our country are introduced to physical education and sports teachers in the first grade of middle school, i.e., in the 5th grade (between the ages of 10 and 11). However, this introduction should be brought down to the age of two or three, when children start going to nursery school. In our study, we attempted to address the development and importance of psychomotor skills in early childhood and the importance of physical education and sports teachers in physical activities and games in educational institutions during this age period.
