Synopsis

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications have found use in many sectors. In other words, there is hardly a sector whose processes are not affected by AI applications. Today, the density of air traffic has reached a level that requires additional measures to manage. There are tens of thousands of aircraft flying at any given time. To manage this growth, the aviation sector can also benefit from AI applications. Flight planning, an airline process, can be one of the areas where AI is used. In this study, developments in AI application in the flight planning process are presented by researching the literature. As a result of the literature review, it was seen that there are studies and sector applications related to AI-based flight planning programs. There are studies and applications on increasing the accuracy of predictions by using past meteorological reports with machine learning algorithms. At the same time, AI models that analyze constraints such as flight area limits, departure times, time windows, and route connections contribute to optimization by offering route preferences to managers and flight operations specialists through the machine learning algorithms they contain. Developments show that in order to manage the growing air traffic in the future, flight planning programs need to be proactive, integrating flight monitoring (tracking) and potential changes throughout the flight after preparing the pre-flight plan. AI applications appear to have the capacity to facilitate this transformation.
