Synopsis

This study aims to examine authoritarian and participatory management, two extremes of management approaches, in terms of their contrasts, complementary aspects, similarities, and functional requirements. The starting point is the assumption that organizations cannot achieve continuity with a single management approach. First, the authoritarian management approach is considered, where decision-making authority is primarily concentrated at the managerial level and a hierarchical coordination mechanism is applied. In this management style, the focus is on order and speed within the organization. Second, the participatory management approach, based on power sharing and employee participation, is discussed. This approach has both advantages and disadvantages in terms of employee participation in decision-making processes. The study argues that there is actually a balancing structure between these two extremes, and that under appropriate conditions, they offer complementary functionality. Following these assessments, which are intended to be concretized with examples from the Turkish context, the chapter avoids normatively recommending a single management approach to managers. Thus, the aim is to understand the two extremes of authoritarian and participatory management as value-producing managerial tools under different conditions.
