Synopsis

Democracy, one of the most important indicators of political development, is considered one of the fundamental sources of legitimacy for modern political systems. Democratization is a multi-dimensional process that cannot be limited solely to institutional arrangements, but is also shaped by the interaction of historical, political, and social dynamics. In this context, each country's journey towards democratization and its democratic culture differ. Indeed, Turkey's experience with democracy reveals a unique cultural development trajectory that includes both continuity and interruptions. In Turkish political life, democratization processes began with constitutional developments and the search for representation that emerged in the late Ottoman period, and gained a new political and institutional framework with the proclamation of the Republic. The reforms implemented during the Republican era created an important foundation for the modernization of the political system and the construction of democratic institutions. However, the transition to a multi-party political system, military interventions, constitutional changes, and social transformations stand out as important turning points that reveal different aspects of the democratization process in Turkey. This study aims to examine the democratization processes in Turkish political life within a historical perspective. I would like to thank everyone who contributed their views and suggestions to the preparation of this study.
