Synopsis
This section addresses listening instruction for middle school students in grades 5–8 from a process-based and AI-supported perspective. In the process-based approach, listening is viewed as a process learned through the application of cognitive and metacognitive strategies during the preparation, listening, and post-listening phases. Research has shown that teaching listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills in an integrated manner enhances language proficiency and supports transfer of skills across domains. The listening learning outcomes of the Turkey Century Education Model, along with values such as patience and empathy, are emphasized in every activity. In this study, a total of 12 activities—comprising three activities per grade level—were designed; daily lesson plans were created using a gradual responsibility transfer model; and the in-class use of artificial intelligence tools was introduced. Additionally, a four-dimensional assessment rubric (accuracy of comprehension, use of strategies, social-emotional skills, and technology interaction) and an AI-supported checklist for teachers were provided. Findings from both international and domestic studies indicate that metacognitive strategy training enhances listening proficiency, while AI tools support motivation and fluency; however, they are insufficient without human guidance. Therefore, the activities were designed in accordance with both pedagogical and ethical principles, with the goal of holistically developing students’ language skills.
