Synopsis

Netizens, who occupy a network-based position within a rapidly evolving social structure, conduct their interactions through digital networks, a situation that brings about various behavioral consequences. This study examines the relationship between netizens’ active participation in online environments and their constant engagement—as manifested within the context of network society—and social media addiction. In this context, the concept of netizen identity was first evaluated within the framework of the network society, followed by an examination of social media addiction. The study indicates that increased participation in digital environments intensifies social media use and creates conditions for individuals to spend more time in online environments. In this context, it is crucial for netizens to use social media consciously, develop awareness of potential risks, and pay attention to time management. In this way, while benefiting from the opportunities offered by digital participation, it may be possible to reduce the risks of addiction.
