Synopsis

This chapter explores the relationship between sustainable human resource management (S-HRM) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the context of social responsibility guidelines and standards. The study examines the roles of frameworks such as the Global Compact, the SA8000 Standard, and the Global Reporting Initiative in guiding human resource management policies in an ethical and sustainable manner. Today, HRM is expected to go beyond implementing sustainability policies, playing a key role in shaping and transforming these policies as well. However, while the integration of S-HRM into organizational strategies contributes to long-term value creation, it also presents various challenges. In this context, limitations such as gaps in strategic alignment, inadequate resource allocation, challenges in performance monitoring and measurement, and discourse–action inconsistencies (decoupling) may emerge during the implementation of these frameworks. Therefore, it is crucial that these standards are not merely complied with at a formal level, but are also genuinely internalized across organizational practices.
