Synopsis

Social anthropology finds traces of religion and state in almost all societies, especially after the transition to agricultural society. The common feature of both is that they provide order and stability brought about by collective living. In addition to the need for belief, religion has the role of setting moral boundaries for people and responding to people's search for ontological meaning. When societies settled down with agriculture and the concept of property emerged, people needed a superior authority to protect their possessions and their lives. We see that the state has taken different forms throughout history depending on time, place and conditions: It appears in different forms such as city states, steppe states, empires, modern nation states and post-modern nation states. Modern nation states are modern state forms that have left their mark on the last three centuries in Europe and the last two centuries in the world. Nation states are forms of state that emerged in the West as a result of the social and economic developments of modernity and spread throughout the world. Today, the state and social structures that modern nation states have created by homogenizing fragmented social structures with an “integrative” approach are currently undermining modern nation and nation states with the multicultural policies of the post-modern approach. History and social anthropology show that the state has always existed, has been constructed in different ways in each period, and will continue to exist in the future. It is predicted that instead of disappearing in the future, the state will become even stronger with technology and may transform into “small nation states” if the multicultural approach continues.
