Synopsis

This study examines empathetic leadership, which has begun to be studied in response to the growing need for human-centered leadership approaches today. Empathetic leadership is a leadership approach that focuses on understanding the emotional states of followers, is willing to care about them, and intends to take action to meet their needs. People also need support and understanding—that is, empathy—in the workplace. Most researchers have begun to refer to the current era as the age of empathy. Although empathy, defined as the ability to feel others' emotions from their perspective and respond appropriately, is an innate ability, it needs to be rediscovered. Studies on leadership show that empathy-based behaviors form the basis for many people. Leaders often use empathy in the workplace to create positive and comfortable conditions for their employees. However, studies focusing on actions aimed at understanding others' emotional states and meeting their needs by showing them importance are quite limited. The goal of empathetic leadership is for the leader to understand the emotions, thoughts, and needs of employees, support them, and thereby create a healthier, more productive, and trust-based work environment. A leadership style that focuses on understanding the emotional states of others and taking action to meet their needs by valuing them is called empathetic leadership. Therefore, in this study, empathetic leadership, which has emerged as a new approach alongside leadership theories from the past to the present, is discussed under the headings of its conceptual framework, basic characteristics, organizational outputs, and the benefits of adopting this leadership style.
