Synopsis

Leadership has long been a significant concept examined both theoretically and practically, closely associated with social and organizational structures. With the advancement of management science, leadership approaches began to be addressed more systematically, and from the early 20th century onwards, leadership theories based on scientific foundations emerged. These theories have been categorized under various headings such as the Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, Behavioral Leadership Theories, Situational Leadership Theories, and Modern Leadership Theories. Over time, leadership perspectives have evolved from individual-centered approaches toward more collective and participatory models. One contemporary reflection of this transformation is the shared leadership approach, which emphasizes that leadership is not solely the responsibility of individuals in formal positions of authority. Instead, it advocates for the active involvement of all members of the organization who possess relevant knowledge, experience, and potential in leadership processes. In this context, shared leadership is considered a collaborative, multi-actor leadership model in which individual leadership roles are distributed across the organization. Although various terms such as “distributed leadership,” “distributive leadership,” and “collective leadership” are used in the literature, the use of the term "shared leadership" is preferred to avoid conceptual confusion and ensure clarity. This approach represents a paradigmatic shift in management science and has gained increasing importance in contemporary organizational structures. In this section, the historical evolution of leadership from its earliest conceptualizations to the present day is examined. The transition from individual leadership models to shared leadership is explored through the underlying developments and theories, followed by an in-depth explanation of shared leadership and the presentation of conclusions and recommendations.
