Organizational Agility Instead of Organizational Inertia

Synopsis

Environmental uncertainties, opportunities and threats that have emerged as a result of intense competition and changes that have reached global dimensions have a significant impact on organizations. In this process of dynamic and continuous change, it becomes important for organizations to protect themselves, eliminate environmental threats and turn opportunities into advantages. Organizations need to develop new strategies in order to continue their activities and gain competitive advantage depending on changing conditions. This situation has raised the issue that organizations need to act more agile in order to continuously adapt to the change process. In the 21st century, agility is no longer a matter of preference for organizations, but a necessity that distinguishes successful organizations from all other organizations with the ability to react quickly to the external environment.

“Inertia” is not only a phenomenon that exists in the lives of individuals. It is also one of the factors that take place in the life of organizations and negatively affect the life of organizations. Inertia in organizations is conceptualized as “organizational inertia”. The concept of organizational inertia can be defined as the inability of organizations to fulfill their functions, to renew themselves, to keep up with changes and to take action. Organizational inertia is seen as a major obstacle on the road to change. In this context, it negatively affects many functions of organizations, especially strategic management, and causes organizations to fail and fail in the competitive environment. The aim of this study is to examine the concepts of organizational inertia and organizational agility theoretically; to discuss the relationship between organizational inertia and organizational agility and to provide information about why organizations should turn to organizational agility instead of organizational inertia. Within the scope of the study, the definition and scope of organizational agility, the dimensions and importance of organizational agility and the characteristics of agile organizations will be discussed; the causes of organizational inertia, its negative effects and ways to overcome organizational inertia will also be explained.
