Synopsis

This article examines the proverbs in Kashgarli Mahmud's Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk in the context of Frame Theory. Since Frame Theory suggests thinking through certain mental structures and frames in the context of language's meaning production, proverbs are analyzed in the light of this theory, with the interpretations of both Kashgarli Mahmud's explanations, artificial intelligence, and Frame Theory. In this article, the compositional role of proverbs in linguistic structures is addressed, a general overview of the foundations of frame theory is provided, and the contributions of this theory to the world of meaning in proverbs are discussed. In the article, Frame Theory is explained in detail, some data is presented on what the concept of frame is. The characteristics of the frame, subframes, and the interactions between culture and frame are also emphasized. From a linguistic perspective, the perspective offered by Frame Theory on how meaning in language is shaped enables the analysis of social and cultural contexts in language. The differences between natural and social frames are particularly emphasized, and how these two categories have different effects on proverbs are revealed.

The main part of the article analyzes the proverbs in Dîvânu Lugâti’t-Türk in a three-stage process using Frame Theory. In addition, the frame of meanings offered by proverbs is emphasized, and general frames are generally created in line with the universal meanings contained in proverbs rather than a specific subject. Inferences are made about how the proverbs in Kaşgarlı Mahmud’s work reflect the cultural codes of the Turkish society of the period. Thus, it is understood that proverbs function not only as linguistic but also as social indicators. The contributions of Frame Theory in interpreting proverbs in a cultural context are emphasized, and it is revealed how effective a tool it provides for a deeper understanding of the world of proverbs.

In summary, this study reveals that Frame Theory offers an effective method for better understanding the cultural and linguistic values of proverbs.
