Synopsis

In recent years, the concept of sustainability has been the subject of intense debate in the economics literature due to the increasing environmental concerns. It is essentially an approach that attempts to ensure an environment that is habitable for the current generation without compromising the well-being of future generations. The central inquiry underlying a sustainable development is whether global living standards are progressing in a manner that ensures their preservation indefinitely, or instead the current trajectory is imposing excessive burdens on the natural environment. In this context, efforts to calculate environmental damage caused by economic activity and thus measuring sustainability have been extensively discussed in recent years. Diverse conceptualizations and emphases about the essential components of a sustainable development strategy give rise to diverse measuring methodologies. While some of these methods attempt to explain the trajectory of sustainability by developing composite indices consisting of several environmental dimensions, others aim to include the environmental factor in the analysis by making some adjustments to national calculations. Although numerous different approaches exist for measurement, no consensus has been reached on a single metric yet. This study will provide an overview of different sustainability metrics and assess Turkey's current situation for selected metrics. The results of these measurements indicate that Turkey has a biocapacity deficit and faces serious problems related to climate change and responsible consumption.
