Synopsis

This study examines the scientific productivity of academics working in Information and Document Management (IDM) departments in Turkey from a gender-based perspective. Within the scope of the research, TRDizin, one of the most comprehensive national databases that systematically indexes academic journals and provides open access, was selected. This preference stems from TRDizin's facilitation of access to academic knowledge produced in Turkey, enhancement of journal visibility, and its official recognition by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Inter-University Board (ÜAK) in appointment and promotion processes. The identification of female academics included in the study was based on the 2024 Higher Education Program Atlas (YÖK Atlas) data from the Council of Higher Education. According to this data, a total of 137 academics work in IDM departments across Turkey, consisting of 62 women and 75 men.

Within the research scope, the distribution of academics by gender, their classification according to academic titles, publication performance based on TRDizin data, distribution of publication types between male and female academics, author roles, citation indicators, and self-citation rates were analyzed. Additionally, the gender-based H-index values of academic staff, journals in which publications appeared and their percentage shares, and projects conducted by academics were evaluated to determine whether scientific productivity in the field differs in the context of gender.

The findings aim to contribute to the literature on gender-based publication performance in the IDM field. Furthermore, by presenting recommendations for developing gender-sensitive policies in universities, the study aims to shed light on strategies for enhancing the scientific visibility and contributions of female academics. In this regard, the study is of nature that will provide a foundation both for evaluating the current situation and for future comparative research
