Synopsis
This article discusses the "women-friendly city" approach by rethinking cities from a gender perspective. The study reveals the obstacles women face in accessing safe transportation, access to healthcare, employment, and participation in local decision-making processes, arguing that these challenges can be overcome not only through urban design but also through institutional capacity, budget policies, and data-driven governance. Examining the Women-Friendly Cities Program launched in Turkey in 2006 and the global examples of Vienna, Barcelona, Stockholm, Bogotá, and Seoul, it analyzes how local governments can institutionalize women-friendly policies. The findings demonstrate that women-friendly cities not only improve women's quality of life but also offer a transformative strategy that strengthens democratic governance, urban justice, and social equality.
