Synopsis

With the development of digital technologies, social media has become one of the most influential tools in health communication. Serving as a decisive medium for the sharing, interpretation, and dissemination of health-related information, it also carries the risk of misinformation. In this context, the concepts of social media literacy and health literacy play a critical role in individuals’ ability to understand, evaluate, and appropriately use health content in digital environments. This study examines the role of social media as a source of health information, focusing specifically on female users. It reveals that women use social media not only as an informational resource but also as a space for solidarity, experience sharing, and collective learning. Women’s social media interactions are found to be particularly concentrated in areas such as pregnancy, fertility, childcare, and psychological well-being; these interactions both facilitate access to information and strengthen social support networks. However, issues such as misinformation, privacy violations, and commercial manipulation create new areas of risk in women’s digital health experiences. The study emphasizes that the most effective way to cope with these challenges is to strengthen health literacy and social media literacy skills. In conclusion, social media offers women significant opportunities for both access to information and social empowerment; however, transforming these opportunities into sustainable benefits depends on conscious, critical, and literate user behaviors. It is expected that this study, which addresses women’s access to health information through social media, will contribute to raising awareness on this important issue.
