Synopsis

With industrialization, new sectors and fields of work have emerged. These new sectors and fields of work also require human resources. People have been provided with financial means to earn a living by creating work areas for them. At the same time, this situation contributes to the country's economy. It is important to protect the health and safety of people in their working environments. Millions of people lose their lives worldwide as a result of accidents and occupational diseases in the workplace. For this reason, it is essential to adhere to regulations to ensure safe working conditions and protect health in the workplace. These regulations aim to prevent accidents and health issues. Measures must be taken to prevent such situations from occurring. Of course, these measures will also have a cost. However, this cost is much less than the cost incurred after an incident occurs. When examining countries' workplace accident data, it is evident that the financial costs incurred after an accident in many countries are equivalent to a portion of their gross domestic product, which is a very high figure. This calculation, which is only calculated in monetary terms and is known as the visible cost, does not include hidden costs. Workplaces suffer losses not only from visible costs but also from hidden costs resulting from a workplace accident. This loss is equivalent to a cost that is significantly higher than the known cost. Preventing workplace accidents and prioritizing occupational health and safety is a globally necessary issue to prevent both costs and deaths. This study defines the concept of workplace accidents and examines and explains the costs incurred by employers as a result of workplace accidents. It also compares the potential costs that may arise with the preventive costs that could have been incurred prior to the incident. The study found that the preventive costs incurred before workplace accidents occur are significantly lower than the costs incurred after the accident.
