2024 Migration School Summer Academy -Studies on Migration and Employment
Synopsis
Gaziantep is one of Turkey's most important cities with a unique character, thanks to its industrial capacity, demographic structure, and urban traditions. Furthermore, this city has been most affected by the civil war in Syria over the last 14 years and has hosted the largest number of Syrian refugees. The city has been able to create a unique structure in terms of both the large Syrian refugee presence and the relationships between the local population and the refugees.
Therefore, due to these characteristics, it would not be wrong to say that Gaziantep is the capital of Turkey's migration policies, and that the migration pattern emerging in this city could serve as an example for other cities in Turkey.
Driven by this impetus, the first Migration Summer Academy was hosted by Gaziantep University in 2022, in partnership with Gaziantep University, Şahinbey Municipality, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). To disseminate Gaziantep's unique experience throughout Turkey, a platform was created where migration experts working in both public and NGO sectors from various cities in Turkey were given lectures by representatives of public institutions, local governments, NGOs, and international organizations related to migration in Gaziantep and the region. During this five-day event, students also had the opportunity to experience the migration practices of these institutions through institutional visits. At the end of the event, each student was asked to prepare an article, and a compilation of these articles was published. The event continued in the same format in 2023 and 2024. The book you are holding now consists of articles prepared by students who participated in the 2024 Migration Summer Academy.
