Synopsis

Globalization, digitalization, increasing competition, and evolving organizational structures have led to profound transformations in contemporary working life. These developments have brought labor—human resources, one of the fundamental factors of production—more prominently to the forefront than ever before. Today’s working environment has become too complex to be explained solely through technical knowledge and professional competence. Consequently, understanding the causes and consequences of employees’ emotions, thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors has become increasingly critical. At this juncture, psychosocial syndromes observed in the workplace emerge as significant phenomena that warrant careful consideration from both individual and organizational perspectives.
The syndromes to which employees are exposed or which they experience directly or indirectly have a substantial impact on numerous critical variables at both the individual and organizational levels. Ignoring these syndromes may result not only in psychological problems for individuals but also in performance losses, increased conflict, and sustainability challenges for organizations. In this regard, examining the causes, consequences, and organizational implications of workplace-related syndromes from a scientific perspective is of great importance for both academics and practitioners.
This book aims to examine psychosocial syndromes commonly encountered in working life from the perspective of organizational behavior through a comprehensive and holistic approach. It addresses contemporary topics that have attracted growing attention in the literature, including Crab Bucket Syndrome, Imposter Syndrome, Boreout Syndrome, Oyster Syndrome, Presenteeism Syndrome, Hobo Syndrome, the Glass Cliff Phenomenon, Burnout Syndrome, Hubris Syndrome, and Silo Syndrome. Each chapter analyzes these syndromes within the framework of their conceptual foundations, underlying causes, individual and organizational consequences, and empirical findings, offering readers an in-depth and systematic evaluation.
Prepared with the valuable contributions of experienced scholars in the field, this work aims to provide the organizational behavior literature with an original and up-to-date resource. Furthermore, it is intended to serve as a guiding resource for managers, human resources professionals, and researchers alike. It is hoped that this book will contribute to both academic inquiry and practical efforts aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of human behavior in the workplace and promoting healthier, more productive, and more harmonious organizations.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the chapter authors for their meticulous and dedicated efforts in bringing this book to fruition, and I hope that it proves valuable and beneficial to its readers.
