Social Memory and Social Studies Education in Türkiye: Cultural Transmission, Political Construction, and Civic Learning
Synopsis
The present volume is a compilation shaped by the meticulous work of various academics and researchers, examining the strong ties between social memory and social studies education. The objective of this book is to elucidate, from a multidimensional perspective, the role of memory sites, cultural transmission, national consciousness, and the construction of social identity within the context of social studies instruction. Social studies education is not merely a tool for knowledge transfer; it is also a means for preserving cultural heritage, transmitting values to new generations, and fostering civic awareness. In this context, the studies presented in this book aim to contribute to the field by offering both theoretical and practical approaches.
During the preparation process, each chapter author presented the most up-to-date data, original analyses, and field-based observations from their research area. Consequently, the work has evolved into a substantial resource that can be utilized in both academic and applied contexts. I would like to extend my gratitude to all our authors, colleagues, and institutions who contributed to the creation of this study and supported us throughout the process. It is hypothesized that this book will serve as an inspiring reference for social studies teachers, teacher candidates, curriculum developers, and researchers.
