Synopsis

The science of movement and exercise is a field of research based on the comprehensive analysis of biomechanical, physiological, neuromotor, and behavioral processes aimed at understanding human performance. In recent years, the field has undergone a significant methodological transformation thanks to the proliferation of computer-based objective performance indicators, the integration of data mining approaches into sports, and scientifically grounded models of training load. This change and transformation have enhanced the quality of research questions in the field and reinforced the accuracy of application-oriented approaches.

This book aims to make the scientific knowledge specific to the field accessible by systematically addressing current research trends in movement and exercise science. The chapters, prepared by distinguished academics specializing in the field of exercise and training science, offer original content that contributes to the literature across a wide range of topics, from muscle-function relationships to performance determinants, from the developmental mechanisms of motor characteristics to methodological innovations in exercise science. Each section critically evaluates existing scientific evidence while also shedding light on potential directions for future research.

My primary motivation for undertaking the editorship of this work stems from my belief that movement science is not merely a tool for enhancing performance, but rather a scientific endeavor aimed at understanding the nature of human movement. The more academic production in sports science is based on high-quality and up-to-date data, the greater the accuracy of field applications and the faster the pace of scientific knowledge development. In this context, the preparation of this book is the result of my desire to contribute a meaningful resource to the field of movement and exercise science, which I have been interested in and striving to contribute to for many years.

I would like to thank all the chapter authors who contributed to the shaping of this work with their scientific rigor, and all the stakeholders who supported the process at every stage. I hope that this book will serve as a strong reference source, both theoretical and practical, for researchers, sports scientists, and students who wish to specialize in the field. In this dynamic field where scientific knowledge is constantly evolving, I hope that this work will contribute to the emergence of new questions and research initiatives.
